I’m on the graduate committees of 3 graduate students (2 PhDs and 1 MS) who had to present their defense presentations and undergo their oral defenses on Zoom. Strange experience for them and me.
The “hooding ceremony” for a new PhD graduate is a very special ritual that both new PhDs and their major professor cherishes. Another lost ritual for 2020 graduates.
I only scratched the surface of the effects on academia and students at all levels.
There is also the reality of all of the students getting their degrees, but no jobs are available. With a national unemployment rate approaching 20%, not a good time to hit the job market!
